We celebrated with him by joining him in some special mitzvot that are done on one's birthday. We gave tzedokah in learned torah by singing "torah tziva" in honor of Zalman's birtdahy.

Zalman showed his friends the tzitzit and kipa/yarmulka he wore today.
"It's because I'm three."
Jewish boys start doing special mitzvot on their third birthdays.
