Math and Life skills through Baking

The recipe called for two cups of sugar. This is what the number 2 looks like with fingers.

Spooning the flour - helps the Yeladim practice control of their hand and utensil (for practical life and it is also a  prerequisite to writing)

Practicing "Fringing" paper skills

Through a Chanuka theme of course!

Science - Float/Sink

The Yeladim watched to see what would happen when they dropped their dreidels in the water.
They fell to the bottom.
Then we tried putting in a Chanuka candle.
Zev: "It's on the top"
So Zev tried to hold it down and see if when he let go it would stay down.

"Look my hands are floating to the bottom!"

Understanding 'Hashem's Home'

Zev was very proud to point out the things that are special to him in his house.
We all have homes. We have special things inside it and try to keep them in safe places and try to keep our houses neat and clean.
Zev: Its hard to clean up our play room
Then we went on in the History of Chanuka about the special things in Hashem's house. It was all built up that when we got to the part where the Greeks ripped curtains, broke tiles and jugs of oil etc and made the Beit Hamikdosh a big mess the Yeladim were devastated!
They described Hashem and the Jewish people feeling
1. Sad
2. Upset
3. wanting to clean it up

Shaina brought in a special doll from her house and she let David have a turn with it even though it is special to her and was a little hard at first to do it. Once she shared it and we sang about it she felt very happy she let him have a turn! Look at her expression!

Math, Science, Art and The Art of Sharing

This was a cool science experiment where the Yeladim first drew with the candles on a paper and then used water paints over it. When the water paints were brushed over the spots where there was wax  it would bubble up and not stain the paper in those spots. collaboration

Math & Hand and Eye coordination. It was meant for each child to do what they were capable of with out pressure of finishing it or "doing it right."  The Yeladim did a phenomenal job at it and it was not easy! It was interesting to watch how each child concentrated to try to match the dot marker on the dot. Some children did more and some less depending on their attention level they are at and then just randomly dotted the rest of the paper :). I was glad those children did not feel any pressure!

Math concepts with in Chanuka - Dreidel Sorting

The Cave

After learning about how the Jews wanted to make a right choice and not listen to the Greek King Antiyochus so they hid in a cave to learn the Torah and keep Shabbat...... The Yeladim built their own cave.
The Yeladim brought in all their Jewish articles: The Torah, Shabbat candles, kiddush cup.... even their Menorahs! (They were very advanced :) - a little early on in the story to be lighting the Menorah:) but to them their Menorah's represent something much greater - their observance of being a Jew!

oh and also some toys to play with just in case they got bored hiding out in the cave:)

Science Discovery in our "cave"

Static is learned through an experience.
Zev noticed Shmuli's hair sticking up and thought it was funny.
Until Morah asked him if it was only on Shmuli....

Binyamin decided to check if "IT" was happening to him too!

Zev tried picking up the blanket to see if "IT" would stop.
....he was surprised to find out it only made his hair stand taller!

What would happen if Shmuli left the cave?... IT WORKED!

A new Picture Torah!

All the Yeladim were very excited this Morning when Zev brought in and opened up a new Torah with pictures inside for our class!
We would like to extend special
Thank you
to the Cohen Family for their special gift to our class
in honor of Zev's 3rd Birthday!

Art & Chanuka

The Yeladim looked through our leaf collection from our "Leaf hunt" yesterday at the park, and chose the ones they liked to 'mod podge' onto their picture frames.

The Chanuka feeling is in the air!
The Yeladim pressed  the Chanuka candles into play dough. They formed all different types of Menorah's.
They also enjoyed putting the candles in and taking them out and looking at the forms they left in the dough.

The Chanuka story has just begun to unfold...
